探せ！エゾフクロウ

僕にとって身近なような、遠いような存在のエゾフクロウ。街中の電線で目にすることもあれば、深い深い森の中ですれ違うこともあります。昼間は樹洞の中でのんびりすやすや、夜になると我らがエゾモモンガに目を光らせてロックオンからの急降下！そんな場面に遭遇したときはどっちを応援すれば良いのやら…。

街中で住民に愛され守られている樹洞に山間部でひっそりとたたずむ樹洞。きっとまだ誰にも見つかっていない樹洞もあるでしょう。夏期間のフィッシングガイドの毎日にエゾフクロウが入りそうな樹洞はたくさん見つけてあります。どれかを気に入って使ってくれないかな。今年も雑草が少なくなって森の中を歩きやすくなったらひとつひとつチェックしてきます。待ってろエゾフクロウ！

Ezo Ural Owls are this strange mix of familiar and elusive to me. Sometimes you’ll spot one casually perched on a town power line, other times you’ll cross paths deep, deep in the old-growth forest. By day, they’re fast asleep in a tree cavity, total chill mode. But come nightfall, they’re locking eyes on our local flying squirrels and making a dive-bomb attack! Whenever I witness that showdown, honestly… I don’t even know which side to root for.

From protected hollows in town loved by locals, to hidden hollows tucked away in the mountains—there are definitely nest sites out there that nobody has discovered yet. During my summer fly-fishing trips, I’ve logged quite a few promising-looking hollows in my head. I’m hoping an owl takes a liking to one of them! As soon as the underbrush dies down and forest trekking gets easier, I’m checking them one by one. Hold tight, guys!
